Twenty-three years ago this September, I turned the key on a narrow shop on West 23rd Street. I was twenty-three years old, with my mother's pattern notebook under my arm and not much else.

She'd spent thirty years cutting on Seventh Avenue. She taught me one rule: a piece is only good if you reach for it on an ordinary Tuesday. That's still the only rule this store has.

This week I've now spent exactly half my life on this street. So for one week, everything is half off — and a little extra when you take more than one home:
